Next Club Meet – Derbyshire 1-3rd August 2014

Posted on July 9, 2014

I love a bit of Derbyshire. I fell in love with it as a boy, when I couldn’t imagine hills much higher than Kinder Scout, when the 10 metre high Stanage Edge seemed the absolute limit of all possible human rock climbing and a school trip giving the opportunity to walk through thigh deep bog was a long anticipated treat.

Now I’m all growed up, I’m still in love with it, although I appreciate it’s other pleasures too. Pretty villages with friendly pubs, grand stately homes with overpriced cafes and stunning scenery are very much the order of the day. Some of the childhood impressions are still true though.  Although I’ve seen much higher mountains, the 300m high Kinder Scout remains my basic unit of measuring mountaineering effort (Ben Nevis is like climbing 5 Kinder Scouts I think, or Everest 30 of them) and the 10 metre high Stanage Edge is still the absolute limit of all possible rock climbing. But I have learnt that you don’t have to walk through a bog to have a good time.

Come and join us for a weekend in the Peak District, where there will be lots to do and see. We’ll be based near Bakewell, and within easy distance of some of the best walking landscape in the country. Climbing venues close by include Robin Hood’s Stride and Cratcliffe. Although it isn’t going to rain, wet weather alternatives such as Haddon Hall and Chatsworth are only a short distance away.
